We're Hiring! STEM Educator

We are looking for a passionate and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a STEM Educator on our Maine Mobile Bioscience Laboratory (BIOLAB). As a STEM Educator on our Mobile Bioscience Laboratory, you will have the exciting opportunity to travel to middle schools across rural Maine, providing hands-on STEM education experiences to students. This is not your typical 9-to-5 job; it's a traveling educator position with ever-changing locations (travel expenses are reimbursed). You'll visit different schools every week, and your responsibilities will include presenting laboratory activities, supporting educators and students, assisting in program development, coordinating school and community partner visits, and managing equipment and supplies for the program. You'll be paired with another onboard Educator during school visits in a co-teaching role.

Our mobile lab is a custom outfitted STEM learning classroom, built inside a trailer that offers a blend of career and skills education, providing flexible in-classroom resources that empower teachers. The mobile labs will mostly serve Maine middle schools (grades 5-8) with a blend of other community and science-based learning programming during school breaks and a focus on rural and under-resourced communities.

The ideal candidate is based in Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, northern Washington or Hancock counties.

Key Responsibilities:

BIOLAB Programming

• Facilitate age-appropriate STEM lessons and activities and extended or enrichment opportunities to students, both onboard the mobile laboratory and in the classroom
• Coordinate logistics, supplies, and scheduling for school visits and events, including daily schedules, ordering and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies, parking information, and general laboratory and facilities management
• Train teachers on the use of laboratory equipment and Learning Undefeated activities, as needed
• Staff after-school events, such as family science nights, and public events, such as conferences and festivals as appropriate, regionally
• Assist with development of curriculum, activities, and materials for middle students and teachers in accordance with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the Maine Learning Results
• Identify lessons learned through evaluation findings and make recommendations regarding program design

Strategic Initiatives

• Support planning and logistics for signature events across the organization including the annual Symposium and Education Leaders Experience visits
• Attend conferences and meetings related to mobile education and career exploration
• Support grant applications and funding priorities
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Completed degree program in science, engineering, mathematics, technology, education, or related field preferred or related relevant experience
• Minimum of 3 years related professional experience
• General working knowledge of techniques for integrating and adapting curriculum and effective instructional practices 
• Ability to self-start and creatively solve problems
• Excellent verbal and written communications; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to diverse stakeholders
• Strong partnership and collaboration skills
• Ability to work autonomously as well as with a team
• Ability and willingness to work flexible hours including nights and weekends
• Ability to organize and support multiple activities simultaneously
• Strong classroom or group management skills
• Strong computer, time management, and problem-solving skills
• Must have a valid driver’s license
• Ability to travel state-wide and have own transport to report to a different Maine school each week. Many of the schools we serve are not accessible by public transportation
• Ability to pass Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization

Preferred Qualifications

• Understanding of the teaching and learning process, including the ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives as well as trauma-informed practices that engages culturally diverse populations
• Prior teaching experience in a school or science setting

This position will require the candidate to commute to schools and events throughout Maine and has a target start date in early January with some flexibility. This is a full-time position with an average 40 hour work week expectation; start and end times flexing based on school schedules.
